Chiayi University Jazz Ensemble/ Band Leader: Nick Javier

Chiayi University Jazz Ensemble is the first Jazz big band established by the University's Department of Music. It was established in 2008. In 2009, the first band leader was the well-known trumpeter Mr. Wei Guangxi, and the current conductor Lawrence Nickolai Javier is acclaimed to be one of the best Jazz musician active in Taiwan . Javier was raised in Mid-Michigan, where he grew up with a close friend whose father was a jazz musician. He was exposed to jazz music in this household through the father's encyclopedic record collection. He then studied jazz at the Royal Conservatoire in the Netherlands where he was mentored by three great trombonists, Ilja Reingoud, Martin Sohier, and Arthur Moore. Javier continued his jazz education at Michigan State University, where he finished a Master of Music degree in jazz studies under the mentorship of Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra alumni; Rodney Whitaker, and Wes "Warmdaddy" Anderson. Currently, Javier has established himself in the Taiwan jazz scene, playing all the major venues in the country. Nick has been a member of the Taiwan All-Stars since its inception for the Taichung Jazz Festival.

國立嘉義大學音樂系爵士樂團
指揮：何尼克老師(Lawrence Nickolai Javier)

嘉義大學音樂系爵士樂團為全台第一個大學音樂系爵士樂團，成立於 2008
年，第一任指揮由知名小號手魏廣晧老師擔任，第二任指揮為紐奧良留學歸國
之校友，新生代爵士薩克斯風手林映辰擔任，現任指揮何尼克(Lawrence Nickolai
Javier) 為著名長號演奏家，先後畢業於荷蘭皇家音樂院與美國密西根州立大學，
獲爵士樂演奏碩士。何尼克老師具有豐富的國際演奏與教學經驗，Nick Javier 自
2010 年起，應聘為兩廳院爵士夏令營的爵士課程指導老師，每年並獲邀於台北
爵士音樂節、台中爵士音樂節與台中樂器節，擔任主要演出者，目前亦定期在
Marsalis Bar(臺北、高雄)、Sappho de Base(臺北)、Retro Café(臺中)演出。現為
Carol Brass 長號代言人。嘉大爵士樂團目前藉由每周固定的練習，提升演奏的精緻度，同時為求精進，亦接受多名國際知名大師的指導。在歷任指揮的用心指導與經營之下，目前已累
積相當的演出經驗，除定期巡迴演出外，並應邀與輔仁大學音樂系爵士樂團交流
演出，以相互切磋，亦曾參與「台中爵士音樂節」和「嘉義管樂節」，與許多爵
士好手及團體同台演出，每場演出皆備受好評。
