1.Song of Mount Tashan Ancient Ballad Troupe, from Laiji Village of the Tsou“Song of Mount Tashan”is a ballad passed down among various Tsou villages, and it is also the name of our group. We are a Tsou ancient ballad troupe consisting of members from kindergarten children to village elders. The“Song of Mount Tashan Ancient Ballad Troupe”carries the mission of perpetuating the ancient ballads of the Tsou people. Through training in both ceremonial songs and dances as well as everyday ballads, we hope to enhance the interest of children and community members in learning these ancient songs, enriching their lives and fostering a sense of pride and self-identity. By embracing our unique identity, we aim to preserve and promote the beautiful artistic culture of the Tsou people.

For the people of Laiji Village, who live under the sacred mountain of the Tsou, Mount Tashan, this is deeply meaningful and carries a cultural legacy. Through the continuation of these ballads, we hope to take concrete actions toward cultural transmission and to protect the eternal community under Mount Tashan.

Lmuhaw

4. Shui-Neng Xie, the Art Master of Nose Flute Lalingdan & Mouth Flute Pakulalu circulated at the Southern Paiwan.
The Paiwan ethnic group is the second largest ethnic group with a population of approximately 105,620 (April 2023), spread among the southern area of the Central Mountain Range of Taiwan.
The Paiwan double-pipe nosed flute Lalingdan is derived from the so-called hundred-step-snake kamavanan, which is said to be the guardian god of the Piyuma tribe. According to the legend, kamavanan symbolizes a rich harvest and prosperity. In the performance practice of Piyuma village, the double-pipe nose flute consists of two bamboo tubes, one is a tube without finger holes and the other with finger holes. The nose flutes with carvings are musical instruments used by nobles, and those without carvings are musical instruments used by civilians.
The single-pipe flute of the Paiwan tribe is called Pakulalu. In Paiwan traditional culture, it was a tool often carried by warriors. It was used as a signal for clashes between tribes, foreign invasions, or the successful head-hunting of the enemy. Due to social changes, the tribes have reconciled with each other, so in modern times the mouth flute has become the favorite instrument of tribes in their leisure time.
In 2010, the Pingtung County Government announced Gilegilau Pavalius (Shui-Neng Xie) as the Cultural Bearer of the traditional art of Pingtung County“Paiwan mouth-flute and nose-flute”and in March 2011, he was invited to be the artist in residence for the 3rd Aboriginal Artists Residency Program of the Indigenous Peoples Committee of the Executive Yuan. In September 2011,“Paiwan mouth-flute Lalingdan and nose-flute Pakulalu”was inscribed as the“National and Important ICH item”and Gilegilau Pavalius as the Art Master.

5. Akawyan Pakawyan (Lin Ching-Mei) and the Pakawyan Family from Puyuma Tribe of the Pinuyumayan
Akawyan Pakawyan, also known as Ching-Mei Lin (1938~), is from the Puyuma village of the Pinuyumayan, one of Taiwan's Indigenous ethnic groups. She is a key figure in the preservation and revitalization of Pinuyumayan traditional music, dance, and language.
In 1991, Akawyan founded the“High-Mountain Dance Troupe,”which focused on passing down Pinuyumayan traditional music and dance. Later, she was awarded the“Golden Perseverance Prize”or the touching story between her and her younger brother, Lin Haoxun (whose Indigenous name is Isao). Despite being completely paralyzed, he never gave up on himself and used bamboo chopsticks in his mouth to tap on a computer keyboard to compose music for the High-Mountain Dance Troupe. With the encouragement and support of Akawyan's entire family, he even toured across Taiwan, earning the nickname“Woodpecker Man.”
Between 2013 and 2018, Akawyan served as the principal of the“Pinuyumayan Garland Community School”and was honored with the“Outstanding Contribution Award for Local Language”by Taiwan's Ministry of Education. In 2022, she received the“Lifetime Contribution Award for the Rejuvenation of Indigenous Language”from Taiwan's Executive Yuan Indigenous Peoples Committee.
In 2023, Akawyan Pakawyan delivered a speech in the Puyuma language, with English and Chinese subtitles, at Melbourne's 2023 Narrm Oration, organized by the University of Melbourne's Indigenous Knowledge Institute. Her participation made her the first non-Australian Indigenous person and the first speaker to present a Narrm oration entirely in an Indigenous language, establishing a new tradition for future speakers.
In recognition of her outstanding achievements in preserving and transmitting Indigenous language, Akawyan Pakawyan was awarded the Indigenous Medal by the Council of Indigenous Peoples in 2024.

6. Kacalisian Double-Pipe Mouth and Nose Flute Heritage Music Troupe
The double-pipe mouth and nose flute musical culture of the Paiwan people, an Indigenous group in Taiwan, is one of the most representative traditional musical cultures in Taiwan. In addition to reflecting contemporary Paiwan life, culture, and musical characteristics, it also showcases the beauty of Taiwan's important indigenous humanistic art. This traditional Indigenous art, deeply characteristic of Taiwan's culture, was designated in 2011 by the Council for Cultural Affairs (now the Ministry of Culture) as a national“Important Traditional Art”and intangible cultural asset. Following this designation, Paiwan master artist and national living treasure, Mr. Pairing Pavavalung (許坤仲), initiated a“Heritage Transmission Project,”which uses an apprenticeship system to teach the knowledge and skills of crafting and playing the traditional mouth and nose flute. This project aims to preserve and expand the transmission and revitalization of the double-pipe mouth and nose flute tradition among the Paiwan people as an essential element of Taiwan's intangible cultural heritage.
In 2018, Mr. Pairing Pavavalung's first two apprentices, Etan Pavavalung and Sakuliu Pavavalung, along with the second cohort apprentice Yu Wei-Min in 2023, successfully completed their training and passed their certification assessments. The Ministry of Culture's Bureau of Cultural Heritage officially certified their graduation, allowing these apprentices to continue preserving this important intangible cultural asset. To further the transmission of knowledge, these apprentices have become the next generation of master artists, promoting the tradition independently and creating opportunities for dialogue with multiculturalism, performing arts, and other intangible cultural assets. Through this work, the essence of the Paiwan double-pipe mouth and nose flute traditional music is revitalized, promoted, and shared more widely.
The“Kacalisian Double-Pipe Mouth and Nose Flute Heritage Music Troupe”is a newly formed music group focused on the traditional Paiwan double-pipe mouth and nose flute as its primary musical foundation. In today's fast-paced, heavy-metal, and technology-driven society, the group seeks to share the ancient, pure, and ecological melodies of this music, conveying the stories, humanistic values, and artistic language embedded within the music.
The term“Kacalisian”comes from the Paiwan language and is a term that the Paiwan people of southern Taiwan use to refer to themselves, meaning“the people who truly live on sloping land.”Before modern civilization and electronic entertainment entered the villages, the traditional double-pipe mouth and nose flute served as a medium of emotional communication between people and as a way of remembering life's experiences. It played an important role in tribal society and in the continuation of their original cultural and artistic heritage.

Kacalisian

7. Chu-Yin Culture and Arts Troupe, the transmitting group of the Amis Polyphonic Singing circulated at Falangaw village, Taitung
The Amis ethnic group is the largest ethnic group with a population of approximately 218,570 (April 2023), scattered through the southeastern coast of Taiwan.
Among all the Amis music and dance, the polyphonic songs circulated in the Falangaw village of Taitung city are the most well-known around the world. Due to population expansion, immigration of the Han people and the expansion of the city, the Falangaw Amis as well as their polyphonic singing spread to the neighboring villages. Therefore, in the so-called“pan-Falangaw area,”people share the same stream of culture and music.
In this unique type of polyphonic singing, usually two or more people form the ensemble group. One is the lead singer and the rest follow. The lead singer starts the singing with the main melody and improvised lyrics, and then the followers join at certain point with one or more highly embellished counter-melodies, called“ikung”(bending) by the Falangaw Amis, to correspond with the leading singers while the musical emotions are simultaneously enhanced. Both main and counter-melodies are based on the same skeletal melody but performed in various ways, thus forming a‘free-counterpoint-like’ polyphonic texture (from the western viewpoint) and an extremely ornamental singing style. In 2021, Falangaw Amis polyphonic songs was inscribed as a“National and Important ICH item”and its transmitting group is Chu-Yin Culture and Arts Troupe.

9. Tulbus Mangququ,a Bunun singer, national music prize winner, Indigenous cultural worker, and a community builder for his tribe, Kunuan, in Hualien, Taiwan.
I am Tulbus Mangququ, a member of the Bunun tribe. Tulbus is the name passed down through the ages. It's the name of a tree, the beech tree, which is closely tied to the Bunun way of life, serving as building material, firewood, and tools.
In the tribe, when I want to introduce myself more sincerely, I say, "Ma nak ngaan a tupaun tu Tulbus Mangququ taingka sia Isnangkuan" (My name is Tulbus. Mangququ is my family name, and Isnangkuan is my mother's family name).
From this, people can usually tell whose child you are, who your elders are, and which tribe you come from. This is important because you must know who you are. If you don't know yet, don't worry, take your time to find out. Just like when the Bunun sing, you will eventually find your place in the harmony, or like walking into the mountains, where you'll always find a spot that feels right. Most of the time, I'm a singer and music creator, a young man from the Mayuan tribe in Hualien. Throughout more than a decade of“returning home”action and also singing, I have gained much gratitude and learning. This journey will never stop, and I will continue to walk it humbly.

10. Kao Yih-Sheng Family Ensemble

11. Seediq Traditional Culture Troupe
The ritual dance song uyas kmeki is a precious cultural heritage of Seediq people, one of Taiwanese indigenous ethnic groups. The essence of its unique polyphonic singing lies on the improvisational singing and dance of the lead singer. In the past years, the knowledge and skill of leading singers have been handed down from generation to generation in the indigenous society. However, nowadays, this tradition has almost vanished. The only case is Obin Nawi—one of the few present-day alive elders who know well about uyas kmeki --leads the younger generation of the Strengan village to continue singing, which echoes the heritage of Gaya ancestral teaching. The“Seediq Traditional Culture Troupe”is composed of Strengan villagers. They continue to sing and dance the ancient songs left by their ancestors, which have been disappearing in the rapid pace, and shed a light on the conservation of this Seediq cultural heritage.
This troupe has been announced and inscribed as a uyas kmeki transmitting group by
the government of Nantou County in 2013. Several leading singers in this troupe possess the qualities of“superb singer and weaver,”that means, they master not only the art of singing but also the weaving skills. They are acclaimed as the“most beautiful woman”in the traditional aesthetic standards of the Seediq.
